What is this service?
Real Property Services (RPS) owns and manages the San Luis Obispo Veterans Memorial Building, also known as the SLO Vets Hall, located on the corner of Grand Avenue and Palm Street in downtown San Luis Obispo. The Board of Supervisors established rules and regulations for the use of the building, which give Veterans' organizations free access and booking priority, but they also allow for rentals to businesses, non-profits, and the general public. Rental fees assist in the operation and maintenance of the building.

Commercial size kitchen with large stove, refrigerator, stand-alone freezer, coffee maker, and commercial dishwasher. No ice machine, utensils or dinnerware. Includes large outside BBQ pit.

||Amount of deposit varies depending upon size and type of event.
A $1,000 deposit is required for large events and all events serving alcohol.

When and where is this service offered?
The SLO Vets Hall is open seven (7) days a week from 8:00AM-12:00Midnight. The SLO Vets Hall is closed several weeks out of the year for maintenance.
The Rental Office, located at 1087 Santa Rosa Street in San Luis Obispo, is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00AM-1:00PM and closed on Fridays.

What is required to make a reservation?
Reservations may be made up to one (1) year in advance. A cleaning and damage deposit will be collected within three (3) days of making the reservation, and the balance is due thirty (30) days prior to the event. Other requirements include:
- a copy of the certificate of insurance showing general liability and automobile coverage (and liquor liability if alcohol will be served)
- a copy of the invoice or contract showing the hiring of security guards
- signed Use Permit
What is included in the Lounge and Kitchenette rental?
The Lounge includes 8 eight-foot rectangular tables, 45 plastic stacking chairs, 4 couches and 4 coffee tables. The Kitchenette, included with the Lounge rental, has a refrigerator with top freezer, coffee maker, microwave, and 3 stainless steel carts. There is no ice machine, utensils or dinnerware.
What is included in the Commercial Kitchen rental?
The downstairs Commercial Kitchen includes a double oven, stove top with griddle, dishwasher, large coffee maker, refrigerator, stand-alone freezer, and large outdoor covered BBQ pit. There is no ice machine, utensils or dinnerware. An outdoor staircase provides access to the Top Floor.
Is audio visual or other equipment provided?
The performance stage, located in the Main Hall, includes curtains, stage lighting, multiple outlets, a podium, and a projector screen. No audio or visual equipment is provided.
Are tables and chairs provided?
The Lounge has approximately 45 plastic stacking chairs and 8-10 eight-foot rectangular tables. The Main Hall/Right Wing has approximately 350 chairs, 46 eight-foot rectangular tables and 21 sixty-inch round tables.
Is parking available at the SLO Vets Hall?
The parking lot has approximately 100 spaces with 11 parking spaces for persons with disabilities. There is also plenty of parking on Grand Avenue.
Can I tour the facility?
There is no on-site attendant. Please schedule an appointment to view the SLO Vets Hall by contacting the Rental Office at (805) 781-5900 during operating hours of 8:00AM-1:00PM Monday - Thursday (closed on Fridays).
Are security guards required?
Renters may be required to hire security guards from one of the County-approved businesses listed below. The number of guards is based on the size and type of event, and whether alcohol will be served or sold.
Requirements for Top Floor rentals:
- Less than 200 guests, no alcohol: one (1) guard
- 100-200 guests, no alcohol: two (2) guards
- 200-300 guests, with or without alcohol: three (3) guards
- 300+ guests, with or without alcohol: four (4) guards
- Whenever alcohol is SOLD, four (4) guards are required.

Are there any noise or decorating restrictions?
Please reduce noise levels during daytime hours in consideration of the Superior Court located in the Left Wing of the Top Floor, as well as Veterans Services and the Veterans Memorial Museum located downstairs. Further, renters are asked to be aware and considerate of the SLO Vets Hall's location in a residential neighborhood. Police can issue citations if sound can be heard more than fifty (50) feet away from the building.
Decorations may not be stapled, nailed, tacked or glued to the ceiling, rafters, walls, lights, or floors, except by using blue painter's tape. Nothing can be hung from rafters or light fixtures. All decorations must be flame-proof and in accordance with local fire regulations. NO SMOKE OR FOG MACHINES ARE ALLOWED.
Is a cleaning and/or security deposit required?
Yes, a refundable cleaning and damage deposit is generally required and will be collected at the time the reservation is made. The County will refund the deposit within 30 days after the rental, provided there are no extra cleaning charges, no damage caused to the Premises, and no other fees or charges incurred by the renter.
Yes, renters must obtain commercial liability insurance, including but not limited to, comprehensive general liability insurance and alcohol liability insurance. If alcohol will be served during the rental, liquor liability coverage is also required. Insurance must provide coverage for a minimum of $1,000,000.00 in damages (may be $2,000,000.00 if Risk Management determines the activity to be high risk) and shall name "County of San Luis Obispo, its officers and employees" as an additionally insured party. Is there a building attendant or key required?
The County does not provide a building attendant. A key will be issued to lock and unlock the building, and will be available for pick-up the day before the event at the County Central Services Department (1087 Santa Rosa Street in San Luis Obispo) during regular business hours.
Is there a discount for non-profit or Veterans groups?
Yes, the County extends a 50% discount off public rates to non-County government agencies and non-profit organizations that can provide 501(c)(3) or similar documentation. Veterans' organizations may reserve up to two years in advance, and are allowed two (2) free rentals per month. General Funded County Departments are entitled to two (2) free uses a month for County-related business only. Non-General Funded Departments and County Departments holding non-County business events such as retirement or office parties (or any event with alcohol) must pay the Non-Profit rate (50% off general public rates). Paid customers have booking priority over County Departments.
What are the rental hours?
The SLO Vets Hall is available for rent 7 days per week from 8:00 AM until 12:00 Midnight.
Is there lodging nearby?
There are numerous hotels and motels near the facility. The hotels nearest the facility are located on Monterey Street.
What are the renter's rights and responsibilities?
A Use Permit, detailing renter rights and responsibilities, will be issued for reservations at the SLO Vets Hall. Renters agree to maintain equipment and premises in good working order, having regard for the age and condition of the building and permitted use, and shall be held responsible for any damage to equipment or facilities beyond reasonable wear and tear. Renters agree to perform all set up and cleaning within the time designated on the reservation permit, and agree that overtime may be charged at twice the hourly rate. Further, renters shall comply with local ordinances and all County rules and regulations. Please, NO CLIMBING ON THE TANK. There is no smoking inside the building and no overnight camping on the grounds.
Are other licenses or permits required?
An Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) license is required for organizations selling alcohol at the SLO Vets Hall. For more information, call ABC at (805) 543-7183. Depending on the event and activity, renters may also be required to obtain permits and/or licenses at other agencies, including but not limited to, the San Luis Obispo Police Department and the Fire Marshall.
Are there any County agencies or departments onsite?
Yes, the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court is located in the Left Wing of the Top Floor. The County Veterans Services Department is located downstairs, and the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum is also located downstairs.
