The California Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Coalition has recognized the Juvenile Hall Court School for successful PBIS implementation at the Silver Level for the 2018-2019 school year. This level reflects excellence of fidelity as well as efforts in implementing the core features of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

In the Fall of 2016 the San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall, in collaboration with San Luis Obispo County Office of Education https://www.slocoe.org/ , implemented Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in the school and throughout the facility. PBIS uses a behavioral management framework that emphasizes and rewards desired behavioral outcomes. This framework focuses on youth demonstrating three main behavioral expectations; being “Safe, Responsible, and Considerate.”  Staff participated in initial and ongoing training to engage with youth by encouraging and reinforcing positive behavior.   Each year the California PBIS Coalition recognizes schools’ implementation of PBIS, giving honors at levels of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

PBIS was fully implemented at the Juvenile Hall in June 2018.  100% of Juvenile Services Officers have been trained in PBIS and there has been a 30% reduction in incidents involving use of physical force.
