For the first time, this fiscal year residents of Los Osos will see two charges included on their annual property tax bills to fund the Los Osos Wastewater Recycling Facility.
One charge on the tax bills will repay the bonds issued for the construction costs. A second charge covers the costs of operating the sewer. This year is the first year that the full costs of the sewer have been billed on the tax bills, which is a much more efficient method of billing than having Public Works bill and collect separately, as was done last year. Residents should be aware that these costs are not tax-deductible even though they appear on the tax bills. Full explanations of the sewer project and related costs are available on the Property Tax Billing Information webpage. In addition to the explanations on the web site, both Public Works and the Tax Collector’s office have staff trained and available to answer questions via phone at (805) 788-6088 or via eForm.
The new Los Osos wastewater system became operational in 2016, ending a ten year work effort. The County initiated planning phases on the Los Osos Wastewater Project in 2006, following the passage of State Assembly Bill 2701 (Blakeslee) which allowed the County to assume responsibility for development of a community wastewater system for Los Osos. Upon completion of the necessary environmental permits and funding approvals, the project began construction in May 2012. The project will provide recycled water to farmers, a golf course and school district, and has no ocean outfall, instead utilizing 100% of the treated water for beneficial reuse.
