Shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, three County water systems workers in a construction zone were involved in an accident in Cayucos. Two of them – Justin Smith, a Water Systems Worker III, and Travis Holt, a Water Systems Worker II – were struck by a vehicle, seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

The crew members were working on a water line at the intersection of Chaney Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in Cayucos when they were struck by a vehicle that swerved off Highway 1.

“Right now, our biggest concern is for our colleagues’ health and safety. We are grateful they are alive,” said Interim Public Works Director John Diodati. “Thanks to the swift action by first responders, they were taken to a hospital where they are being treated for their injuries. Please keep these two members of our community in your thoughts as they heal.”

Both are recovering.

"Considering the situation, it’s a miracle that Travis and Justin will recover from their injuries – I’m very thankful for that," said CAO Wade Horton. "I’m proud of the support Public Works is providing  their teammates, and I wish Travis and Justin a quick recovery."
