Veterans Burial Benefits

For Burial in a National Cemetery
Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any of our 135 national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, at no cost to the family. Some Veterans may also be eligible for Burial Allowances. Cremated remains are buried or inurned in national cemeteries in the same manner and with the same honors as casketed remains.

Persons Eligible for Burial in a National Cemetery

Please review the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration criteria for persons eligible for burial in a National Cemetery, as well as those who are not eligible.

The National Cemetery Scheduling Office has the primary responsibility for verifying eligibility for burial in VA national cemeteries.  A determination of eligibility is made in response to a request for burial in a VA national cemetery.  To schedule a burial fax all discharge documentation to 1-866-900-6417 and follow-up with a phone call to 1-800-535-1117.

This service is provided free of charge.

This service is available throughout the year during regular business hours except during scheduled holidays.
