Tsunami Information

Although rare, tsunamis can strike the San Luis Obispo County coastline.  The best way you can prepare your family for a tsunami is to teach them the warning signals. 

To Prepare for a Tsunami

• Determine the risk of tsunami at your home. Click Here
• Know the signs of an imminent tsunami: receding water, possible roaring sound, earthquake. After any of these signs, you should move to higher ground immediately.

During a Tsunami

• If you do not have time to escape inland, get as high as you can. Take refuge in a tall, sturdy building and hold on.
• Once the water recedes, do not return to the coast. Tsunamis are a series of waves. More may strike.
