2012 Emergency Preparedness Calendar

To ensure the safety of those who live or work in the Emergency Planning Zone, we annually distribute important emergency planning information regarding Diablo Canyon Power Plant. This information is required and regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This year we chose to return to the calendar format so that you may hang it in your home or offfice. This way, you will know where to find information in case of an emergency and can help prepare yourself and your family throughout the year. We have taken steps to ensure that this public information is environmentally friendly and cost effective. It has been printed on recycled/recyclable paper with a soy-based ink, in a local Certified Eco-Print facility. Photography is by Sam Peck, Coastal Zen.
If you would like a free copy of our our 2012 calendar, please contact our office at 781-5011.
Early Warning System Sirens Successfully Tested
The full scale test of the San Luis Obispo Early Warning System sirens took place on Saturday August 27, 2011. All 131 sirens operated successfully and sounded for 3-5 minutes in both of the siren tests. The sirens were activated twice to test the primary and backup controls for the system. The test required no action on the part of the public. During major emergencies, the sound of the sirens indicates to the public to tune to a local radio or television station to receive information and instructions.
There are 131 sirens in San Luis Obispo County that stretch from northern Nipomo Mesa to Cayucos and east through San Luis Obispo. Approximately 145,000 residents are in the area covered by the Early Warning System sirens. The sirens are one of the public notification systems available to San Luis Obispo County authorities should an emergency take place. The county has other public notification systems and procedures in place including reverse telephonic notification systems, route alerting, and the Emergency Alert System.
The Early Warning System sirens were installed in 1982 as part of the Emergency Response Plan for Diable Canyon Power Plant, but may be used for other types of emergencies. The County of San Luis Obispo operates the siren system and it is maintained by PG&E.
We would like to thank our local media for publicizing the annual siren test, KSBY television station for providing an infomation crawl over televised programs before and during the siren tests, and San Luis Obispo County Public Works and Caltrans for providing information to the public by way of road-way electronic message boards. We thank the many volunteers from the San Luis Obispo County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SLOVOAD) as represented by the following organizations: Woods Humane Society, San Luis Obispo Emergency Communication Centers (SLOECC), Homeless Animal Rescue Team (HART), Food Bank, and American Red Cross.
