We strive to meet our Probation Department mission, and continuously review policies and processes to ensure operational efficiency. Because public input is important to us, the Assistant Chief Probation Officer investigates all complaints filed with the Department.
In accordance with Section 832.5 of the Penal Code, “each department or agency in this state that employs peace officers shall establish a procedure to investigate complaints by members of the public against the personnel of these departments or agencies, and shall make a written description of the procedure available to the public.” Members of the public, clients or minors under the jurisdiction of the Probation Department, and departmental employees, have the lawful right to file a complaint relating to performance or alleged misconduct within the San Luis Obispo County Probation Department.
A complaint is defined as an allegation of a specific act or omission by an employee in violation of law, regulation, or policy or procedure of the Department or County. Please note that it is against the law to make false allegations about a peace officer. If you make a complaint knowing that it is false, you can be held liable and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Department takes all complaints very seriously. The Internal Affairs Unit will receive, document, and investigate, as required, all allegations of misconduct or neglect of duty involving its personnel. Prompt action will be taken to review, investigate, and respond to each complaint filed in the Internal Affairs Unit.
Any personnel actions that may result from a complaint are confidential and precluded by law from disclosure.
