Kitchen

The Juvenile Hall includes a well-equipped kitchen staffed by professional cooks. Three meals, and two nutritional snack breaks are served daily. A selected group of minors detained at the Juvenile Hall assist in the preparation of meals.

In 2005, the Probation Department implemented a kitchen vocational program in conjunction with the County Office of Education. This program provides professional training in the area of food management and preparation and allows the participating minors to accrue school credits in the process. Minors who work in the facility kitchen are also able to complete community work service hours ordered by the Juvenile Court.

The Probation Department is a participant in the National School Lunch Program, which is administered by the Federal Department of Agriculture. In addition to receiving federal funding for a percentage of our overall food costs, the Juvenile Hall is also a recipient of federal agricultural commodities in the form of dairy products, dried goods and produce. These commodities further offset our overall kitchen operational costs.
