The Juvenile Division of the San Luis Obispo County Probation Department provides services along a continuum of care, including prevention, intervention, supervision, and incarceration. Each area plays a key role in the juvenile justice system.
In FY 2004/05 there were a total of 1,616 juvenile referrals (.03% reduction from 2003/04), which resulted in the filing of 684 petitions (14% reduction from 2003/04). Many of the referrals to Probation are diverted from formal court action through early intervention and diversion services. The Probation Department has increased its diversion and assessment services over the last year by providing services at the lowest level possible in an effort to reduce the number of minors formally entering the juvenile justice system. By doing this, the Probation Department is trying to reduce the number of minors who become Wards of the Court.
