The Probation Department works to supports victim’s rights to have a voice in the system, to be made whole from their economic loss suffered due to a crime by being paid restitution from money collected from the person or persons who criminally caused their loss, while maintaining the confidentiality of the victim and providing a safe method for repayment ensuring the victim’s safety during this restorative justice process.
Restorative Justice is a concept that strives to make the victim whole, hold the offender accountable and maintain community safety. This is the mission of the Revenue Recovery Unit and the actual legislative intent of serving the victims of crime. It is a vital function of the Probation Department to aid the victim through the often confusing, difficult and the time consuming process of collecting a court ordered debt from a person convicted of a criminal act.
Victims are notified of court hearings providing them with their rights and the opportunity to tell their story to the court during sentencing. Deputy Probation Officers and Collection Officers obtain victims’ statements for court reports, both adult and juvenile, to ensure that the court is aware of all financial and nonfinancial impacts and circumstances related to each case. Victims are also notified when a defendant that may have threatened their safety is released from custody . Victims are referred to appropriate local and state agencies for necessary services, including but not limited to, counseling, mediation or to the Victim Witness Unit at the District Attorney’s office to obtain assistance in applying for State funding for ongoing counseling and medical attention.
