What is Probation

Probation is a community-based correctional program that serves as an alternative to incarceration for juvenile and adult offenders. Each county in California has a probation department whose vast legal mandates are found in sections of the Penal Code and Welfare and Institutional Code.

The Chief Probation Officer of San Luis Obispo County oversees the five divisions of the probation department and its 185 employees. The probation department is an arm of the courts, enforcing the court's orders as well as providing investigative reports to the courts. Additionally, the probation department provides early intervention and prevention services to youth, and operates the Juvenile Hall in the County.

Each offender on probation is assigned to a probation officer whose goal is to provide opportunity to the offender in becoming a productive, law-abiding citizen. Probation officers are sworn peace officers and may arrest those who violate court orders or probation conditions.

The probation department provides services as determined by the law, court orders, the risk the offender presents to the community, and the needs of the offender and family. More information is available by calling (805) 781-5300.
