COASTAL DUNES & OCEANO CAMPGROUNDINFORMATION
Oceano Campground is located in the small beach-side community of Oceano and is approximately 1/4 mile west of the Pier Avenue entrance into Pismo State Beach Recreation Area. Park visitors can enjoy a picnic at the nearby Oceano Memorial Community Park or go fishing at the private lagoon.
In addition to activities in the campground and park, you can venture out to a myriad of local attractions. The Oceano Dunes provide excellent terrain for the off-road thrillseekers and there's plenty of sandy beach for the sunbather and for taking a relaxing, evening stroll.
Oceano Park and Campground was once a favorite hunting and fishing ground of the Chumash Indians. Due to the somewhat harsh terrain, though, settlement of the area was mostly ignored until the 1900s. With the advent of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1890s came a real interest for the development of Oceano.
The Oceano community was founded in 1893 and was originally to be called Deltina. Within a few weeks the name was changed to La Bolsa and then to Oceano, Spanish for "ocean." It was a real estate name, to capitalize on its location. B each resorts and large subdivisions sprang up and then, unfortunately, fell to the woes of the Great Depression. In the wake of this difficult era, growth and development continued. The Oceano Memorial Park and Campground are a part of the many improvements made during the 1950s to help enhance the community of Oceano, as well as the County of San Luis Obispo.
Located just a short distance from Oceano Campground is Oceano Memorial Park which offers picnic facilities, children's playground and a basketball court. You can celebrate a birthday, family reunion or company picnic by reserving the Sparrow Day Use Group Area.
