How You Can Help

There are two things you can do to prevent the introduction of exotic pests into our county:

Have all fresh produce and plant materials inspected and approved by an Agriculture Inspector before bringing them into California. This can be done away from home or as you enter California. We can provide phone numbers of the nearest inspector.
Allow the Department of Agriculture to place pest detection traps in your fruit trees or vegetable garden. To offer your yard to trapping, fill out the form below. One of our staff will inspect the trap weekly or biweekly and then remove it after one to three months depending on host fruit availability. That’s all there is to it.

Are Pest Detection Traps Safe?

There are several different types of insect traps used. The most common is a delta-shaped, plastic coated cardboard with a sticky cardboard insert and attractant lure. A few traps contain a small amount of a diluted insectide (Dibrom 1% or 5%). Most traps are placed in trees out of the reach of children or pets.

What Happens if an Exotic Pest is Found in a Trap on My Property?

If we find a quarantine-type pest then more traps will be put in your neighborhood. If multiple pests are found, measures will be taken to eliminate the pests from your neighborhood at no cost to you or other homeowners.
