Friday Night Live: FNL is a primary prevention program, geared to high school students, designed to prevent alcohol, tobacco, drug use and violence by providing alternative activities, leadership development, and skill building. Now in its 14th year (Friday Night Live started in California in 1984 and in San Luis Obispo County in 1991), FNL is located on 9 high school, 9 middle school, and 12 elementary school campuses throughout SLO County. FNL members meet regularly as a school chapter with an adult Advisor to plan activities for their individual school. FNL Leadership teams consist of students who are willing and committed to represent and drive their school’s FNL chapter. These students have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through annual FNL youth leadership conferences like TeenQuest and Teenwork, as well as other local and state leadership experiences.
While each FNL chapter plans activities at their own school, the FNL Coordinator plans countywide events for all students such as Mock Rock, Poly Parties and the annual ski trip. These events aim to serve youth countywide as fun alternatives to potentially unsafe situations that are common in any teen’s life. Other countywide activities include dances, Dodger trips, movie nights, holiday parties and a Magic Mountain trip.
Friday Night Live Mentoring Program: The FNL Mentoring program is a powerful cross-age team mentoring concept. At many of our high school chapters, students are matched with middle school youth from a feeder junior high in order to promote school bonding, tutoring, and safe, productive activities. The mentoring program provides opportunities for leadership development, community service projects, positive role modeling, and transitions for middle school students. FNL Mentoring is supported through a state grant.
Club Live Program: Club Live, the junior high version of Friday Night Live, brings this exciting youth development program to 7th and 8th graders. Club Live events and activities are high energy as well as student led. Club Live members have the continual opportunity to learn ways to socialize and have fun in a drug and alcohol free atmosphere. Activities include assemblies, noontime events, dances, and community service.
Club Live is located, at last count, on nine middle school campuses throughout the county.
Friday Night Live Kids Program: FNL Kids is designed for elementary school youth in 4th through 6th grade. It provides leadership opportunities, service learning, high-energy activities, games, Chapter membership, and positive peer and adult partnerships. FNL Kids gives elementary youth an opportunity to create, plan and implement their own activities. Similar to the FNL and Club Live programs, FNL Kids provides youth with the opportunity to succeed in a safe environment, free from drugs and alcohol.
