Behavioral Health Board

The San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health Board is a State mandated Board. Membership consists of 15-20 residents of San Luis Obispo County.

Objectives of the Behavioral Health Board:  

  • Review and evaluate the community’s behavioral health needs, services, facilities, and special problems, to ensure services are provided that improve and maintain the health and safety of individuals and families affected by mental health and/or substance abuse issues.
  • Review performance contracts of all providers of services with the San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health Department.
  • Advise the Board of Supervisors, the Behavioral Health Department Director (hereinafter referred to as Director), and the County Alcohol and Drug Program Administrator as to any aspect of the County’s mental health, alcohol and drug treatment and prevention services.
  • Review and approve the procedures used to ensure citizen and professional involvement at all stages of the planning process.
  • Submit an annual report to the Board of Supervisors on the needs and performance of the County’s Behavioral Health Department services and the public mental health system in the community, as requested by the Board of Supervisors.
  • Review and make recommendations on applicants for the appointment of the Behavioral Health Administrator of the Behavioral Health Department, which also serves as the Mental Health Director. The Behavioral Health Board shall be included in the selection process prior to the selection by the Health Agency Director.
  • Review and comment on the County’s performance outcome data and communicate its findings to the California Mental Health Planning Council.
  • Assess the impact of realignment of services from the State to the County, on services delivered to clients and on the local community in order to make recommendations for any service level reductions or expansions.
