Twenty percent of San Luis Obispo households report that someone in their household has/has had a severe emotional or mental health problem.
Senior citizens are the most under-served age group in the county; young adults (16-25) are the second most under-served.
The community’s recommendations for use of the new funding:
Reduce the caseloads of current mental health workers
Improve access to care, both in knowing what’s available and where to go, and in being approved for services
Increase services, expand what’s currently available
Emphasize “whole person” care—help improve overall life success
Provide more housing
Improve crisis response and aftercare
Improve awareness and education about mental illness, services available and how to access them
Improve the inpatient psychiatric health facility (the state is not allowing funds to be used for these services)
