(Mental Health Services for Students via AB3632/Chapter 26.5)
Some students have an emotional disturbance that interferes with their ability to benefit from their education. A school psychologist may make a referral to County Mental Health to determine if a youth is eligible for Specialty Mental Health Services to address social, emotional and/or behavioral issues that interfere with their success at school. The assessment determines that student does or does not meet the criteria for Mental Health Services. When a student meets the criteria for services, the therapist will recommend the type of Mental Health Services required to address the identified problem(s). The local School district will arrange an Individual Education Planning meeting. The parents, child, teacher, MH therapist, school psychologist and other participants the family selects or approves of develop the Individualized Education Plan that will address the child’s academic, social and emotional needs. The IEP will describe goals/objectives, the type interventions to be performed, and the frequency and duration of the treatment. Ongoing evaluation and coordination of services will continue throughout the course of treatment to assure that the Individualized Education Plan is appropriately meeting the needs of the student.
