Tobacco Settlement funds received by San Luis Obispo County are a result of a settlement in November of 1998 between state attorney generals and US tobacco companies. The State receives 50% of the revenues and counties receive 50% of the revenue. Payments will be made to state and local governments for 25 years.
In the Tobacco Control Program the funding serves to fill the funding gaps both for the prevention/education services and the stop smoking services for pregnant women. Not only does the funding provide stop smoking services to the general population, it also is the sole source of funding providing those services to the general population. Without Tobacco Settlement funding, stop smoking services would not be available to the general population.
The funding is combined with the other two sources of funding (Proposition 99 and Proposition 10) to support a comprehensive tobacco control program in the county. Without (or with a reduction) in funding, the program would have to reduce prevention education services to the community, reduce stop smoking services to pregnant mothers and eliminate stop smoking services to the general population.
