The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Officer would like to inform you that pertussis cases in San Luis Obispo County continue to rise, with over 190 confirmed, probable or suspected cases reported to the Public Health Department as of June 24th. There have been two infants hospitalized with pertussis during this outbreak. As a result, the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department is offering vaccine to infants, children over the age of ten in need of a booster and adult caregivers and household contacts of infants. El Oficial de Salud Pública del Condado de San Luis Obispo le gustaría informarle de que los casos de tos ferina en el Condado de San Luis Obispo siguen aumentando con más de 190 casos confirmados, probables o presuntos casos reportados al Departamento de Salud Pública a partir del 24 de Junio. Ha habido dos bebes hospitalizados con tos ferina durante este brote. The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department continues to investigate pertussis cases in all areas of the County, with adults, adolescents and infants being diagnosed. Pertussis can be spread through the air when people cough. It often starts like a common cold, which then gets worse over the next 1-2 weeks. People with pertussis have coughing spells that may last several seconds. As they catch their breath at the end of each coughing spell, they may gasp loudly (“whoop”) and vomit or choke. Infants may stop breathing or turn blue.

El Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado del San Luis Obispo continúa investigando casos del la Tos Ferina (Pertussis o “Whooping Cough”) en todas las áreas del Condado, con adultos, adolescentes y infantes que son diagnosticados. La Tos Ferina se puede pasar a través del aire cuando la gente tose. Frecuentemente, comienza como una gripe común y sigue empeorando sobre 1-2 semanas. La gente con la Tos Ferina tosen demasiado y la tos puede durar varios segundos. Cuando se tratan de respirar despues de toser, puede oir un ruído raro en alta voz (como “whoop”) y vomitar o ahogar. Los infantes pueden dejar de respirar o el color de la piel se pondría morado o azul.
