Hearing Bodies

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission's primary function is to study proposed developments that may have an impact on the County's growth and environment. The five-member commission meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 8:45 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors Chambers of the County Government Center in San Luis Obispo. The Planning Commission is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and represent each district within the County.

  • Conditional Use Permits
  • Tract Maps
  • Tract Maps with concurrent Conditional Use Permits
  • General Plan Amendments (for recommendation to the Board)
  • Appeals of the Planning Director’s determinations
  • Minor Use Permits (if elevated by the Planning Director)
  • Third Time Extensions for all Land Use Permits

Subdivision Review Board

The Subdivision Review Board includes five members from various agencies including Planning, Public Works, Air Pollution Control District, and Environmental Health. The Subdivision Review Board reviews the following entitlements:

  • Parcel Maps
  • Parcel Maps with concurrent Conditional Use Permits
  • Lot Line Adjustments (when not exempt from CEQA or when in the Coastal Zone)
  • Conditional Certificates of Compliance

Planning Department Hearing

A Planning Department Hearing is overseen by one of four Hearing Officers. A Hearing Officer reviews the following entitlements:

  • Minor Use Permits
  • Lot Line Adjustments
  • Appeals of Environmental Determinations
  • Appeals of Administrative Fines
  • Road Names

Appeals

The decision of any of the above hearing bodies may be appealed to the Board of Supervisors by any interested party within 14 days of the decision date. If no appeal is filed, the action is considered final after 14 days. An appeal fee is required for most appeals. Board action is considered final, except that projects in the Coastal Zone may be eligible for appeal to the Coastal Commission.
