Below are some of the actions the County is taking to provide a safe voting experience. ALL VOTER SERVICE CENTERS will be laid out to ensure the safest possible environment. Voter Center protocol will include: 

• You are encouraged to wear a face covering, bring your own blue or black ballpoint pen, and maintain physical distancing, as indicated in public health guidelines 

• Protective face coverings for election workers and voters 

• Barriers between elections workers and voters 

• Voting booths will be spaced 6 feet apart and will include privacy barriers 

• Hand sanitizer 

• Regular cleaning procedures to disinfect all common surfaces voters utilize 

• Vote by Mail envelope drop off outside the actual vote center.  

• Drive up/curbside voting will be available at all vote centers for voters with disabilities and voters who cannot wear protective face coverings.  

• Because of size restraints of some vote centers, we will limit the number of voters allowed inside at a time. There may be delays; please be patient and allow extra time.  

Keep It Safe – Your safest option is to Vote by Mail, but if you need to go to a Voter Service Center, come early during the first three days of voting to avoid lines on Election Day.

If you are registering or re-registering AFTER October 19th you will need to complete the Same-Day Voter Registration process and request your ballot in person at the Clerk-Recorder office or polling location.  

You may drop off mail-in ballots at any Drop Off location beginning October 5th, or at any Voter Service Center during hours of operation. 

You may vote in person at any Voter Service Center beginning October 31st.

Before you send or return your ballot, remember to sign your return envelope. 

Ways to Return your Vote-By-Mail Ballot 

• USPS Mail: No postage necessary. Ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day 

• Bring it to one of our Election Offices (SLO & Atascadero): October 5 to November 3 

• Vote-By-Mail Ballot Drop Box: Open October 5th – November 3rd  

• Voter Service Centers: Open October 31 – November 3rd  

All Registered Voters will get a Ballot in the Mail. Every Active Registered Voter will Receive a Vote by Mail (VBM) Ballot in the mail  

Ballots are scheduled to be sent September 29 Voters can sign up to track their ballots once it is in the mail stream. Voters are ENCOURAGED to fill out their VBM ballot and return it. 

If you have not received your ballot by October 9th, contact the elections office to request a replacement by calling (805) 781-5228 or email [email protected].

Ballots are expected to be mailed to active registered voters in San Luis Obispo county on September 29, 2020; six days prior to the California deadline for doing so. You may track your ballot by registering with California BallotTrax. 

You can vote in person starting Saturday, October 31st to Election Day November 3rd  at any one of the 23 Voter Service Centers located around the County. The Voter Service Centers are open during the following dates and times:  

• Saturday, October 31st – Monday, November 2nd, 9 A.M. – 5 P.M.  

• Open ELECTION DAY: Tuesday, November 3rd, 7 A.M. – 8 P.M. 

Vote-by-Mail ballots can also be dropped off at Voter Service Centers during hours of operation.

The Help America Vote Act requires first time voters to show identification when voting. If you registered to vote by mail after January 1, 2003 and have not previously voted in San Luis Obispo County you may be required to show one of the following:

• Your current valid photo I.D. or a copy of one of the following that shows your name and address when you go to the polls on election day
• Current Utility Bill 
• Bank Statement
• Government Check
• Government Paycheck
• or a Government Document 

The same requirement applies if you are voting by mail. You will be required to send a copy of one of the above with your voted Vote By Mail ballot. If you have questions about your status as a First Time Voter, contact us.
