What is the process?

Ensure You Qualify

Check the California Secretary of State's website to ensure you qualify as a military / overseas voter.

Ensure You Are Registered to Vote

Check your Voter Registration Status in San Luis Obispo County using the online Voter Status Lookup.

If you are not registered to vote in San Luis Obispo County, you must complete and mail or fax the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to our office to register and request your vote-by-mail (absentee) ballot. When you complete your FPCA, you can choose to receive your ballot and voting materials by mail, fax, or email/online.

Request Your Vote-by-Mail Ballot

If you are already registered to vote in San Luis Obispo County, you can use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to request a vote-by-mail (absentee) ballot. When you complete your FPCA, you can choose to receive your ballot and voting materials by mail, fax, or email/online. You can mail, email or fax your signed form to our office.

Receive Your Vote-by-Mail Voting Materials

If you requested to receive your vote-by-mail (absentee) ballot and voting materials by mail, they will be mailed to you no later than 45 days prior to an election.

If you requested to receive your vote-by-mail (absentee) ballot and voting materials by email/online, an email with a link to access your ballot and voting materials will be sent to you no later than 45 days prior to an election.

If you requested to receive your vote-by-mail (absentee) ballot and voting materials by fax, they will be faxed to you no later than 45 days prior to an election.

Cast Your Ballot!

Return your ballot by mail: Your voted ballot and signed return envelope must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by the elections office no later than 7 days after Election Day. Mail to:

Return your ballot by fax

If you are living outside the territorial limits of the United States or are called for military service within the United States on or after the final date to make application for a vote-by-mail ballot, you may return your ballot, Voter Declaration and Oath of Voter (to waive your right to a confidential vote) by fax, but they must be received in our office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

If you are unable to fax directly to us and need fax assistance, send to: (703) 693-5527 / DSN 223-5527 or (800) 368-8683 or check FVAP.gov for international fax numbers. If you need to fax and do not have access to a fax machine you can email your forms to [email protected]. If using this service, we encourage you to send your ballot as early as possible.

 

NOTE: Under California law, while you may receive a blank ballot by email, you may not return a voted ballot by email.

Who can use this service?

Under the Federal UOCAVA Act of 1986, Military / Uniformed Service Members and United States citizens living outside the territorial limits of the United States or the District of Columbia for reasons of employment, study programs, or military service (including the spouse or dependents of one serving in the military) are eligible to register to vote and request a vote-by-mail ballot.
