The Morro Bay Library hosted its 1st Annual Touch-A-Truck event on April 6, 2019. The event was an opportunity for families to meet local heroes, and take a look at the equipment they use.

On Saturday April 6th, 2019 the County of San Luis Obispo Morro Bay Library hosted the first annual "Touch a Truck" celebration, where families were invited to the library to meet local heroes and helpers and TOUCH the vehicles they drive.  Over 700 people attended the event in the Morro Bay Library parking lot in just 2 hours!

The Morro Bay Fire Department, Morro Bay Harbor Patrol, San Luis Ambulance, and SLO Waste Connections brought out a fire truck, ambulance, jet-skis, and a high-tech, shiny garbage truck respectively, which were well received by the attendees. The families got to go inside, or touch, each of the vehicles at the library, and the truck drivers were able to meet the kids they serve in the community. County of San Luis Obispo Animal Services was there to talk to the kids about animal safety and how they help find lost dogs, and the kids loved going up the ramp and sitting in the dog kennel. Next year they hope to have some adoptable animals with them!  There were also two food trucks, Beau's Dogs and What the Truck, in addition to a dump truck from a local construction company.

Morro Bay Library also hosted local community agencies that set up tables with information and activities for families and kids. The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Health, Oral Health Division, gave out activity books, toothbrushes, and information about local oral health resources. The County of SLO Parks and Recreation Department and the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardner provided a seed planting activity for the kids, who could then take their plant home.

This event was a great success and served a huge population along the County of San Luis Obispo coast. People from Oceano, Atascadero, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Los Osos, Cayucos, and Morro Bay attended. Morro Bay Library looks forward to next year where it will be bigger and better! Morro Bay Youth Librarian, and event organizer, Kaela Popovich Villalobos said that “Touch a Truck” was such a successful event it will now be hosted annually. Thanks to our local community partners, County of SLO departments, and Morro Bay City collaborators that were the main reason for the success.
