The County is working with community partners to provide some much-needed relief to the community’s housing problems.
Under the direction of the Board of Supervisors, the County Department of Planning & Building has partnered with the Coalition of Housing Partners to develop solutions that would provide some relief from the current housing needs in San Luis Obispo County.
Through research including a nexus study, the Coalition of Housing Partners found a $2-4 million gap in funding needed to provide the resources necessary to increase not only low-income housing, but workforce housing and middle-income housing as well.
The proposed initiatives include partnerships, updating permitting and processes in order to get much-needed housing to market and increasing funding for affordable housing.
On December 4, 2018, the Board of Supervisors considered a suite of actions to address the housing situation. The Board enthusiastically received the information and have directed the Department of Planning & Building staff to move forward with further action. The next steps will be to modify various County ordinances, processing guidelines, as well as research additional funding sources. The Department of Planning & Building intends to return with these items in May 2019.
The Coalition of Housing Partners includes representatives from Central Coast Homebuilders Association, Economic Vitality Corporation, San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, Housing Trust Fund, San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles Housing Authorities, Habitat for Humanity and Peoples’ Self-Help Housing.
