Tree Removal Request
The Department of Planning & Building issues tree removal permits in accordance with county regulations, which differ in the inland and coastal portions of the county. Some areas have additional regulations regarding the removal of trees. Anyone wishing to remove a tree on their property should first contact department staff to determine what regulations apply to their property.
What is the process?
Complete a Tree Removal Request Form
Review by Planning Staff
Planning staff will review your tree removal request and provide you with an invoice number to pay any fees online.
Pay Invoice
Planning staff will email the applicant an invoice, which the applicant can pay online here*.
*Make sure to add INV to the invoice number (e.g. INV2021-01234), when searching for the invoice online.
Arborist Will Inspect Trees
An arborist will come out to the location to inspect the trees, and then provide feedback to the County. This typically happens a week after the tree removal request is made.
Planning Staff Contacts Applicant
Planning Staff will contact applicant with the information that the arborist provided.

Is there a charge for this service?
Please refer to the Department of Planning & Building Fee Schedule for application fees.
L12 - $560.00 for up to 5 trees, $50.00 for each additional tree.
When and where is this service offered?
This service is available throughout the year during regular business hours except during scheduled holidays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. All parcels in the coastal zone are required to submit a tree removal request form to the Department of Planning and Building before the removal of a tree. The review fee is dependent on the number of hazardous trees requested to be removed.
