August 2023 County Labor Market Information

Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County decreased in July 2023.

The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (July 2023) shows an increase in the civilian labor force, an increase in civilian employment, and a decrease in civilian unemployment.

 

Unemployment

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 3.3% in July 2023, which is a decrease from the revised June 2023 rate of 3.5%. SLO County ranks as the 3rd lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California is 4.8% and 3.8% in the nation during the same period.

 

Month-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the most job growth in this reporting period, adding 600 jobs.  The Mining, Logging, and Construction industry added 300 jobs during the month of July.

The Manufacturing, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, Professional and Business Services, and Other Services industries all had no change during the July reporting period.

The Government industry experienced the largest loss with 1,400 jobs. The only other job losses reported in July 2023 were experienced in Private Education and Health Services, with a loss of 100 jobs.

Total Farm lost 300 jobs during the month of July.

In the July reporting period, San Luis Obispo County employers experienced a loss of 900 jobs overall.

 

Year-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the largest year-over change, gaining 1,900 jobs. The Private Education and Health Services gained 1,400 jobs and the Government industry gained 1,300 jobs over the past year. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities experienced a year-over gain of 800 jobs. The Manufacturing and the Other Services industries experienced a year-over gain of 300 jobs each.  The Mining, Logging, and Construction industry experienced an increase of 100 jobs over the past year.

No year-over changes were reported in the Information industry.

The Financial Activities industry experienced the most job losses this past year, losing 200 jobs. Professional and Business Services also experienced a loss of 100 jobs since this same reporting period in 2022.

Total Farm experienced a year-over gain of 100 jobs.

Overall, employers in San Luis Obispo County gained 5,900 jobs over the past year.
