July 2023 County Labor Market Information

Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County increased in June 2023.

The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (June 2023) shows no change in the civilian labor force, a decrease in civilian employment, and an increase in civilian unemployment.

 

Unemployment

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 3.5% in June 2023, which is an increase in the rate reported in May 2023. SLO County ranks as the 4th lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California is 4.9% and 3.8% in the nation during the same period.

 

Month-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the most job growth in this reporting period, adding 500 jobs.  The Government industry added 200 jobs during the month of June. The Manufacturing and Professional and Business Services industries both added 100 jobs during the same period.

The Mining, Logging, and Construction, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, and Other Services industries all had no change during the June reporting period.

The Private Education and Health Services industry experienced the largest loss with 300 jobs during the same period.

Total Farm added 100 jobs during the month of June.

In the June reporting period, San Luis Obispo County employers experienced a gain of 700 jobs overall.

 

Year-over Job Changes

The Private Education and Health Services industry experienced the largest year-over change, gaining 1,300 jobs. The Government and Leisure and Hospitality industries both gained 1,200 jobs over the past year. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities experienced a year-over gain of 900 jobs. The Manufacturing industry experienced a year-over gain of 400 jobs.  The Other Services industry experienced a year-over gain of 200 jobs.  The Professional and Business Services industry experienced an increase of 100 jobs since 2022.

No year-over changes were reported in the Financial Activities and Information industries.

The Mining, Logging, and Construction industry experienced the most job losses this past year, losing 100 jobs.

Total Farm experienced a year-over loss of 200 jobs.

Overall, employers in San Luis Obispo County gained 5,000 jobs over the past year.
