Adding the veteran designation to your license will allow veterans to access benefits without needing to carry around their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD 214)

Eligible veterans who would like to have their status as a veteran added to their driver license or ID card can now do so thanks to a recent change in state law. Adding the veteran designation to your license will allow veterans to access benefits without needing to carry around their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD 214)

Adding the designation is easy. You will need to make an appointment with the County Veterans Services Office (CVSO) with your original or a certified copy of your DD 214 to receive a Veteran Status Verification form. Once you have the form you can take it to a DMV regional office and pay a onetime $5 fee plus any other applicable fees for renewal or duplicate license.  If you don’t have an original or certified copy of your DD 214, the staff at the CVSO will be happy to assist you in ordering a certified copy from the National Archives.

While you are meeting with a representative from the CVSO you can also get a review of your benefits, to make sure you are getting the benefits you earned due to your service. We recommend calling our office at 805-781-5766 to schedule an appointment. We have appointments available in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Arroyo Grande.
