Detection of shiga toxin 1 and 2 in a stool specimen or broth culture by enzyme immunoassay.

TEST FREQUENCY & RESULT AVAILABILITY

Performed daily. Results are typically available within 1 business day after specimen receipt.

 

ACCEPTABLE SPECIMEN TYPES AND COLLECTION

  • Stool in transport medium (e.g., C&S or Cary Blair)
  • Unpreserved stool in a sterile container
  • Stool in broth culture (e.g., GN or MacConkey broth after incubation for 16–24 hours)

 

SPECIMEN STORAGE & TRANSPORT

Stool in transport medium : Store and transport refrigerated (2–8 °C/36–46 °F) for up to 14 days.

Unpreserved stool in sterile container: Store and transport refrigerated (2–8 °C/36–46 °F) for up to 14 days.

Stool in broth culture (pre-incubated): Store and transport refrigerated (2–8 °C/36–46 °F) for up to 7 days.

 

REJECTION CRITERIA

  • Hold time greater than 14 days for stool in transport medium or a sterile container
  • Hold time greater than 7 days for stool in broth culture (previously incubated)
  • Samples that are not stored refrigerated
  • Samples that arrive in containers that are damaged during transit or are not properly labeled with patient identifiers
