Temporary Sign Information

San Luis Obispo County supports the public’s right to political expression, including the display of political signs, as an important part of civic participation. At the same time, all signage within the unincorporated areas of the county must comply with applicable provisions of County Code, including Title 22 (Land Use Ordinance) and Title 23 (Coastal Zone Land Use Ordinance).

Political signs are generally considered as a form of temporary signage; however, they are subject to reasonable regulations intended to protect public safety, preserve community aesthetics, and ensure fair and consistent enforcement. The County does not regulate the content of political messages but enforces these regulations in a content-neutral manner consistent with constitutional protections. These regulations include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Location Restrictions: Signs may not be placed within public rights-of-way, on utility poles, traffic control devices, or other public property unless expressly authorized. Signs must be located on private property with the consent of the property owner.
  • Safety Requirements: Placement must not obstruct visibility for drivers, pedestrians, or cyclists, particularly near intersections, driveways, or roadways.
  • Timing and Duration: Temporary signs are allowed on a property for a total of 120 calendar days per year. Each sign is allowed for up to 60 consecutive days, and shall be removed within 14 days after the conclusion of the purpose served by the sign
  • Size and Height Limits
