Who is eligible?

Any owner or user of a weighing or measuring device that is being used or is going to be used commercially in San Luis Obispo County.

Is there a charge for this service?

The inspection of a commercial weighing or measuring devices does not have a cost.
Registration fee depends on device type and number of devices at location.

When and where is this service offered?

San Luis Obispo office:
    Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for drop off
    Scheduling with an Inspector is best for prompt service
The San Luis Obispo office has the ability to inspect:

  • Hanging scales below 100lb
  • All scales below 500lb
  • Water Submeters
  • Electric Submeters
  • Vapor Submeters

Templeton office:
    Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for drop off
    Scheduling with an inspector is best for prompt service
The Templeton office has the ability to test

  • Hanging scales below 100lb
  • Platform scales below 500lb

Field inspections may be done by appointment.

Payment is accepted by cash or check to the Department of Agriculture/Weighs and Measures San Luis Obispo Office.
 

Inspections vary depending on the type of device. Inspectors will do their best to not interrupt business activities. For seasonal devices, appointments may be accommodated.

Device Registration is valid from June to May.

Registration fees are dependent on the annual County Fee Schedule.

All submeter devices, water, electric, and gas, are inspected within a 10 year cycle. All other devices are inspected annually.


The registration fee is completely separate from the device inspection. The Commercial device registration fee is mandated by the County of San Luis Obispo. The device inspection is to ensure compliance of the device and its use with state law and regulation.

All water, electric and gas meters are required to be brought to the Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures office in San Luis Obispo. All Farmers market scale are required to be brought to the San Luis Obispo or the Templeton office for annual inspection. Small scales 500lb and below can be brought to the San Luis Obispo or the Templeton office. All other devices will be inspected in their "as used position" at the place of business.
