You can make a difference for the health of young people in SLO County.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office and Health Agency regularly conduct tobacco compliance checks to ensure retailers do not sell tobacco products to people under the age of 21.

In 2017, 12 citations were issued to tobacco retailers found in violation of California's Tobacco 21 law.

Volunteer decoys are needed for these compliance checks. Volunteers must be between the ages of 18-20 and have a valid California ID. Volunteers should be available for about four hours per check, and may volunteer more than once.

Volunteers are compensated with a thank-you gift card and gain valuable experience to add to their resume.

If you are interested in volunteering or know someone who is, please call 805-781-5540 or email us to learn more.
