The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works will install new flashing crosswalk lights, also known as beacon systems, to crosswalks in Avila Beach, Cayucos, and Nipomo.

Work is scheduled to start on December 1, 2021 and conclude by April 2022 dependent upon weather.

The following locations were identified, and the improvements were prioritized to increase safety to the travelling public, and pedestrians:

Avila Beach – Ontario Road at Bob Jones Bike Trail Crossing

  • Includes advance warning lights and overhead flashing light activated by new pedestrian push buttons.

Cayucos – North Ocean Avenue at the mid-block crosswalk between Cayucos Drive and D Street

  • Includes new concrete bulb-outs with curb ramps.

Nipomo – Tefft Street at Dana Elementary Mid-Block Crosswalk

  • Utilizes existing curb ramps and center island.

For the safety of the public and workers, temporary traffic control measures including closed shoulders, lane shifts and one-way controlled traffic with flagging may be required between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans and consider alternative routes. Please refer to the attached maps for the project locations.

Souza Construction of San Luis Obispo, CA has been awarded the contract for $281,087 to perform the work. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program, and County Road Fund.
