Community-wide celebration at the Nipomo Skate Park grand opening Saturday, May 6, 2023

Come celebrate the opening of the Nipomo Skate Park.
Nipomo – The fences around the new Nipomo Skate Park are down and the park is now available for skaters to enjoy. Bowls, quarter pipes, and grind ledges will greet skaters and their families at the Nipomo Skate Park and there will be a grand opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The event will be in the Nipomo Community Park at the intersection of West Tefft Street and Orchard Road.
The public has waited over five years for this park to come to life and nearly a year since construction began on the $3.5 million project last May. County of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department is proud to have led the way.
“We are excited to finally be able to open this long-awaited skate park for all to enjoy and we thank all the skaters for their patience as we worked through the process to bring this to the community,” said Nick Franco, County Parks Director.
The 10,000-square-foot park and 5,000-square-foot plaza was designed through workshops that began in 2018 with the local Nipomo skateboarding community. It features two bowls, quarter pipes, grind ledges, stairs and rails, and other features proposed by the community. Included in the park is an art pole painted by students at Dana Elementary School where rangers will mount broken skateboards donated by local skaters.
Funding for the project came from Parks Public Facility Fees and two grants from California State Parks through the Proposition 68 Parks Bond Act: $456,230 from the Per Capita Grant Program and $1,131,484 from the Regional Park Program.
“I am thrilled for the kids and families of Nipomo to begin enjoying this long overdue community resource,” said 4th Supervisor Jimmy Paulding said. “This skate park is an excellent example of our community coming together to make Nipomo an even better place to live. I want to thank all of the community advocates for their commitment and perseverance, as well as our hardworking staff and my predecessor Lynn Compton for making this project happen.”
Everyone is invited to join the celebration and to enjoy the park all day Saturday. Skaters who wish to donate to the art pole are encouraged to bring a broken skateboard to the event. The park is open every day from 7 a.m. until dusk.
