Fireworks and sky lanterns are banned by ordinance and are illegal to use, sell, or possess in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County unless otherwise permitted.
As we all begin to celebrate the 4th of July this weekend, a reminder that all fireworks and sky lanterns are banned by ordinance and are illegal to use, sell, or possess in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County unless otherwise permitted. Safe and Sane fireworks are only allowed within the boundaries of San Miguel, Templeton, Oceano, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, and Morro Bay. Local municipalities are also agressively going after those using illegal fireworks with the use of drones and street patrols.
If you are caught using safe and sane fireworks outside the boundaries mentioned above, expect a fine of almost $400. The use or possession of dangerous/Illegal fireworks anywhere in the SLO County leads to a misdemeanor citation and a $2000 fine. In addition, if you are responsible for starting a wildfire, you will face civil and criminal penalties, including reimbursement of all suppression costs.
We must only remember the smoky summers of 2020 and 2021 to realize the dangers of wildfires in our community and state, so please adhere to the rules and celebrate by taking in all the various community events happening throughout the weekend and into the Fourth.
Some communities do plan to offer professional fireworks displays for your legal enjoyment. And there are many Independence day themed activities for you, your family and your pets to enjoy. Check out lists throughout San Luis Obispo County in the following articles:
