Public Surplus offers the community an opportunity to bid on items no longer needed by County departments.
What happens to vehicles when they are retired from their assigned departments? Where does government property go after it has been replaced or is no longer needed by a department? First, departments make attempts to either reuse or reallocate the items within the County. If still unclaimed, the County offers open auctions where anyone can bid on items ranging from previously owned County vehicles to children’s bicycles to unique furniture.
The County sold 128 items, including vehicles, in 2019. The pandemic put a halt on auctions, but bidding is on the rise again in 2022. One of the most popular items the County auctions is used vehicles. “We won’t sell something that we wouldn’t drive ourselves or that cannot be legally used in California,” says Fleet Manager, Lucas Janetski. “We want to provide a service to the community by having vehicles available that have been meticulously maintained and taken care of throughout their lives. We want to make sure people feel comfortable trusting us.” One example is an upcoming auction for a 2014 Ford Explorer with just under 100k miles and a navigation system. It has been carefully maintained by the County’s expert Fleet staff, and the bidding will start at $1,000 at 3:00pm this Friday, April 15th.
