Standard ADUs
In the County of SLO, there are two (2) different Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU) options for single-family dwellings and two (2) different ADU options for multi-family dwellings. As you click on the type, further detail will be provided. Only one option may be used on any given parcel.
Sites with existing or proposed Single Family Dwellings (SFD)
Single Family Option 1: Proposing one attached ADU OR one detached ADU OR one JADU within the primary dwelling.
Single Family Option 2: Proposing one detached ADU AND one JADU.
Sites with existing or proposed Multi-Family Dwellings (MFD)
Multi-Family Option 1: Proposing two or fewer detached ADUs.
Multi-Family Option 2: Proposing multiple ADUs within existing MFD
How to Apply for an ADU Building Permit
- Check with County Planning Staff for any restrictions to the parcel by contacting us.
All ADUs in the Coastal Zone require additional noticing.
If the ADU is proposed in the Coastal Appealable Zone, it may be appealed to the Coastal Commission. Please check with County Planning Staff to determine if the parcel is appealable to the Coastal Commission.
