Public Records Request

The Department of Planning & Building provides access to the records it maintains in accordance with the California Public Records Act (CPRA).

Public Records Act (PRA) Costs and Fees

PRA requests are processed without charge, other than the direct cost of duplicating records. However, to support efficient and equitable processing, certain requests that require extensive staff time for research, data compilation, analysis, or customized record preparation may be subject to a research request fee. These fees are established in the Department’s adopted Fee Schedule and are intended to recover the reasonable cost of staff time and resources associated with such requests.

If a request is determined to qualify as a research request, the Department will notify the requester in advance and provide an estimate of the applicable fee. Work will not begin until the requester has acknowledged and accepted the estimated cost. Research request fees are assessed in addition to any applicable duplication fees.

PRA Timeline and Duplication Fees

Department staff will respond to Public Records Act requests within ten (10) business days of receipt. In certain circumstances, an extension of up to fourteen (14) additional days may be required, as authorized by the California Public Records Act.

If hard-copy records are requested, applicable duplication fees must be paid at the time the records are duplicated.

Access to various records, including construction permit records issued after the year 1990, are available on PermitSLO Portal Public Records (See video below for instructions on how to search PermitSLO for public records).
