Our Purpose

SAFE is a System of Care, not a single program but multiple county agencies and nonprofits that connect families and children with the right support at the right time. Families are an important part of the team. SAFE works alongside families to help them understand their options, connect with resources, and coordinate services based on their individual strengths, needs, and priorities. Through prevention and early intervention, SAFE works to address challenges before they become crises and reduce the need for more intensive or formal interventions.

Our Goals

1. SAFE works to help children, youth, and families remain safe, healthy, and connected in their homes, schools, and communities.
2. Strengthen family stability, safety, and well-being by connecting families with support early.
3. Help children and youth remain successfully at home while supporting school attendance, engagement, and success.
4. Help prevent challenges from escalating and reduce the need for out-of-home care, intensive services, or involvement with formal systems.

Who We Serve

SAFE takes a whole-family approach, recognizing that children do best when the people who care for them have the support they need, too. SAFE supports families in San Luis Obispo County from pregnancy through adolescence, including expectant families, young children, school-age children, and teens. Support may focus on a child, parent or caregiver, or the family as a whole, depending on what is happening and what the family identifies as most helpful.

How We Help

The family is an important part of the process and support looks different for every family. Some families may simply need help finding the right resources or knowing where to start. Others may benefit from ongoing resource navigation, coordination, or case management. SAFE brings families and community partners together provide a number of services, including:

• Identify strengths, needs, priorities, and concerns for each family.
• Help connect families to services at local family resource centers across the county.
• Bring advocates and partners together to coordinate support, address challenges early, and help families stay strong and stable.

Safe Intensive Meetings

When a family is experiencing multiple or more complex challenges, a SAFE Intensive Meeting may be helpful. These meetings bring the family and the professionals supporting them together to:

• Understand the family's needs and priorities.
• Identify barriers that may be making it difficult to move forward.
• Coordinate services and resources across agencies.
• Develop a shared plan with clear next steps.

SAFE Intensive Meetings are voluntary. They are typically coordinated with a school representative, case manager, or other professional who is already working with the family. The goal is to work together to identify strengths, coordinate support, and find a path forward.

To request a SAFE Intensive Meeting a SAFE Intensive Meeting, please complete the Referral Form here. The referral packet must also include the County of San Luis Obispo Multi-Agency Referral and Client Release of Information (Form 815). SAFE Coordinators cannot begin coordinating communication between agencies, speaking with families, or scheduling a meeting without a completed Form 815.

Services and resources may vary by community based on local needs and available resources. Family Resource Centers can help families identify and connect with the right level of support.
