Fall Prevention

Falls are preventable. Small changes can help improve strength, balance, awareness and safety.

Know the Risk Factors

Older adult falls are caused by a combination of personal and environmental risk factors. Understanding these factors can help identify opportunities to reduce fall risk.

Tips to Reduce Fall Risk

Personal
Environmental
  • Use assistive devices safely. Use canes, walkers, hearing aids, and other devices as recommended
  • Use safe footwear. Choose well-fitting, non-slip shoes.
  • Review medications. Consult a doctor or pharmacist, some medications may cause dizziness or sleepiness.
  • Check vision and hearing. Regular exams can help identify changes that increase fall risk.
  • Avoid rushing.  Take time when standing up, turning or changing positions.
  • Build strength and balance. Consider walking, tai chi, or a balance class.

  • Remove tripping hazards. Clear walkways, secure loose rugs, and keep cords out of the way.
  • Improve lighting. Use adequate lighting, especially in hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, and on stairs.
  • Add safety supports. Properly installed grab bars and handrails can help prevent falls.
  • Choose safe walking routes. Look for well-lit, even paths with safe places to cross.
  • Plan for emergencies. Keep a phone or alert device within reach and have a plan for getting help after a fall.
