The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport celebrates its first year of operations in its new terminal.

The San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport has successfully completed its first year of operations in its new terminal.

The new terminal opened to outbound travelers November 2, 2017. More than five times larger than the previous terminal, the new space was designed to bring the outdoors inside. High ceilings and large windows bring in natural light, which is reflected off the colorful stained floors. The terminal also contains a unique outdoor courtyard and a café post-security.

Since the opening, the airport has won two major awards for the terminal project. In May, the development team won the John L. Martin Partnered Project of the Year Award from the International Partnering Institute, and in October, the airport was named the Best Airport/Transit Project in Southern California and Hawaii by Engineering News-Record.

Additionally, San Luis Obispo Airport was named one of the fastest growing markets in North America, by Airports Council International – North America. With 407,646 passengers in 2017, the San Luis Obispo Airport registered a 23.4% increase over 2016 levels. The jump makes the airport the fifth-fastest-growing airport in the United States, and seventh-fastest across the continent. The airport hopes to repeat the high increase again for 2018, as airlines have brought larger planes into the market, and United added a second daily nonstop flight to Denver.

“We’re thrilled with the new terminal,” said Kevin Bumen, Director of the airport. “The terminal design allows for an intuitive and comfortable traveler experience, which was the central purpose of the development. The terminal is also able to easily handle our passenger growth. Our tenants love it, our passengers love it, and the airport staff loves it. We hope every year in this terminal will be as successful!”

Below are a few statistics about the new terminal.

Since November 2017:

  • 33,662 vehicles have parked at the airport
  • 429,995 passengers have used the airport (Nov – Sept)
  • 9,046 aircraft operations have been performed at the terminal (Nov – Sept)
  • 1 cow has stood guard in front of the terminal
