Vacation Rentals

San Luis Obispo County’s Vacation Rental Ordinance allows for the short term rental (less than 30 days) of a residence. To be able to utilize a residence as a short-term rental, an owner must have a zoning clearance from the Department and a Business License from the Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector-Public Administrator (ACTTCPA). Legally established vacation rentals comply with location restrictions, operational standards, and permitting requirements.

Short-Term Rental (STR) Annual Review Fee

The Board of Supervisors approved the annual review fee for all short term rentals starting  January 2026.  This fee will cover the associated costs to manage a growing short term rental market with over 2,200 registered license holders.

The fee will be used to administer the STR program with consistency, transparency, and accountability for the applicants and the communities they are in.
