With wildfire season and other natural disasters posing ongoing concerns across California, the San Luis Obispo County Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures is encouraging farmers, ranchers, and agricultural operators to attend one of four upcoming Ag Pass trainings this April.

Offered in partnership with San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, the Ag Pass program provides qualifying agricultural property owners and operators with specialized disaster readiness training conducted by first responders. Participants learn about fire behavior, emergency communication, and the Incident Command System, critical knowledge that may allow limited emergency access during a disaster to care for livestock, croplands, vineyards, orchards, and other essential agricultural infrastructure.

Over the past two years, the San Luis Obispo County Department of Agriculture/Weights and Measures heard clear feedback from growers, ranchers, and industry partners requesting more frequent training opportunities earlier in the year. In direct response, the Department worked closely with County Fire to prioritize and schedule four free trainings this April to improve readiness across the county.

Ag Pass cards are issued in advance of a disaster and are limited to eligible property owners and operators who complete the required training. However, possession of an Ag Pass does not guarantee access during an emergency, as safety conditions and incident command decisions will always guide access.

The Department strongly emphasizes that agricultural operators should not rely on temporary passes during an active incident. Proactive participation in Ag Pass training is the best way to prepare, protect agricultural assets, and support coordinated emergency response efforts when disaster strikes.
