OFFICIAL STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 8, 2026
On October 8, 2026, our office was informed that the parent of a local middle school student was detained by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The circumstances surrounding this incident, along with reports of increased federal immigration enforcement activity, are deeply concerning. Currently, we do not have information regarding the specific circumstances or reasons for this individual's detention. This lack of transparency creates unnecessary fear and uncertainty for all our community, who may be left wondering whether they or their loved ones could face similar actions. When enforcement actions affect local families, the absence of clear information can have far-reaching consequences, especially for children who deserve to feel safe and secure in their communities.
Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, and our local governments have limited authority to intervene. However, that does not diminish our responsibility to the people we serve. California and San Luis Obispo County have established protections for immigrant communities, and we remain committed to upholding them, providing access to essential services, and advocating for transparency and accountability when federal enforcement actions affect our residents.
Members of the community may document any activity they directly witness when it is safe and appropriate. If you have information you would like to report directly to my office, you may email me at [email protected].

Our community should not have to face uncertainty and fear alone. I will continue to advocate for the safety, dignity, and well-being of our families and children.
