Expect Delays for Pier Avenue Betterments Project in Oceano

Drivers using Pier Avenue in Oceano should expect some delays on weekdays from March 16 through late May, as crews work on improvements to the corridor. During construction, one-way traffic control and flaggers will guide vehicles through the work zone.

Residents and businesses in the project area will be notified 72 hours prior to work via door hangers. Temporary “No Parking” signs will give advanced warning of parking restrictions on certain workdays.

The project includes resurfacing of approximately 0.4 miles of Pier Avenue from the California State Parks entrance to Highway 1. Crews will add a 2-inch layer of new asphalt to the existing roadway. This work will improve the driving surface and help extend the life of the road, reducing the need for future patching and repairs.

On days that asphalt paving takes place, there will be “No Parking” on Pier Avenue. Driveway access will be restricted for a few hours until the product cures. Driveway access will be limited to emergency needs only.

Once the roadway is paved it will be restriped to include buffered bicycle lanes, along with one eastbound lane and two westbound traffic lanes, consistent with the Pier Avenue Multimodal Corridor Study approved by the County Board of Supervisors on October 7, 2025.

Crews will also:
  • update crosswalks
  • install flashing beacons at a mid-block pedestrian crossing
  • upgrade the curb ramps in accordance with the County’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan
Some striping and painting work will take place before and after paving, though only minimal delays are expected during these activities.

The County of San Luis Obispo maintains approximately 1,100 miles of paved roads and projects like this keep roads safe and in good condition.
