The County of San Luis Obispo Libraries will host author Jarrett J. Krosoczka as part of Book to Action program. The community is invited to read his graphic novel, Hey, Kiddo, and attend the author talk on April 10 at 6:30 PM at the SLO Library.

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries are excited to announce our pick for our 2019 community reads program, Book to Action. We invite the community to read, discuss, and take action with this year’s title, Hey, Kiddo, by Jarrett J. Krosoczka.

Hey, Kiddo is Krosoczka’s profound illustrated memoir about growing up in a family grappling with his mother’s heroin addiction. A 2019 National Book Award finalist, Krosoczka’s graphic memoir recounts how an art class and a sketchbook saved his life.

Hey, Kiddo, written for young adults, is available in libraries for checkout; a book club kit option is available as well.  The Library will also offer additional programming based on themes from the book and Krosoczka’s 2012 TED Talk about his childhood. Community partners SLO Opioid Safety Coalition will also provide resources for programming.

“This book breaks your heart and cracks you up. It’s such a timely topic–we think it will resonate with both teens and adults,” said Erica Thatcher, Collection Development Coordinating Librarian.

With funding from the Friends of the Atascadero Library, San Luis Obispo Friends of the Library, and the California Center for the Book, Krosoczka will visit students at San Luis Obispo High School, Atascadero High School, and the County of San Luis Obispo juvenile hall. The community is invited to an evening with the author at the San Luis Obispo Library on Weds., April 10, at 6:30 p.m., where Krosoczka will discuss his memoir and sign books.
