NEWS RELEASE
San Luis Obispo County has released the Draft Nipomo Community Plan Update for public review, marking a major milestone in the effort to guide future investments in infrastructure, parks, and public services. Residents are encouraged to review the draft and provide feedback during the public review period, which runs through November 30, 2026, as well as attend a community workshop on November 8.
The Nipomo Community Plan, which guides land use planning, transportation, and community projects, was last updated in 1994. Since then, several of the projects envisioned in the original plan have become reality, including major roadway improvements, restoration of the historic Dana Adobe, new schools, and a new public library. However, many longstanding infrastructure and service needs remain.
The updated plan establishes a long-term vision for Nipomo's future, identifying priority projects and strategies to fund critical community improvements. Key areas of focus include:
- Traffic and Circulation: Roadway improvements to address congestion and improve mobility, including the Southland Interchange project.
- Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity: New bicycle lanes, safer crosswalks, and improved connections throughout the community.
- Parks and Recreation: Expanded park facilities, recreational trails, and other community amenities.
- Community Facilities and Services: Investments in public facilities, including a new community and recreation center.
"Nipomo has changed a lot over the past 30 years, and as our community has grown, so has the need for better infrastructure and public services," said District 4 Supervisor Jimmy Paulding. "That's why I advocated for the County to prioritize updating this plan. This is our opportunity to identify the improvements our community needs, establish clear priorities, and develop a strategy to make them happen. Most importantly, I want Nipomo residents to have a voice in shaping that future."
The draft plan reflects extensive community engagement over the past 18 months, including three public workshops and two community surveys that generated more than 1,400 responses. The Planning and Building Department is now seeking additional feedback before the plan advances to public hearings before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors in early 2027.
Residents are encouraged to review the draft plan and share their feedback on what they support, what should be changed, and what may be missing. The County will also host a final community workshop to review the contents of the plan, gather additional feedback, and answer questions:

Residents can review the draft plan and submit comments online at slocounty.ca.gov/NipomoUpdate. The public comment period closes Monday, November 30, 2026.
“We’ve got a lot of momentum building in Nipomo,” added Paulding. “Between the new Sheriff’s substation under construction next year, safer crosswalks in Olde Towne, funding for Jim Miller Park and the first phase of the Nipomo Community Park perimeter trail, and a potential partnership with the YMCA to build a community and recreation center, we’re seeing real progress on priorities our community has been talking about for years.
“The Community Plan Update is our opportunity to build on that momentum, identify what needs to come next, and make sure residents have a voice in shaping the future of Nipomo. Whether your priority is safer roads, better parks, or more community services, I encourage you to take a look at the draft and tell us what you think. Your input matters."
