Who can use this service?

Anyone can use this service.

Is there a charge for this service?

This service is provided free of charge. Nicotine replacement therapy is also available free of charge to participants enrolled in cessation classes if they meet eligibility requirements.

When and where is this service offered?

For more information, please call the Health Promotion office at (805) 781-5564.  While participants can join Quit Tobacco classes at any time, they must call in advance of their first session.

I want to quit tobacco. What resources do you offer to help?

The Tobacco Control Program offers many different FREE resources to help YOU quit.

  • We offer free quit tobacco classes to the public. (please see schedule of classes)
    • Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is provided to qualified partiicpatents, that are actively enrolled in the classes.
  • The Tobacco Control Program offers a FREE free texting service that includes support and weekly tips.
  • How do I sign up for the texting support?
    • FREE local text support: Text "SLOQUIT" to 20121
    • FREE local, tailored text support for pregnant women or women & familes with children under 5 years old: Text "SLOBFB" to 20121
    • FREE national text support: Text "QUIT" to 47848 (available 24/7)
When can I start the classes?

We advise all clients to start classes on the begining of each class cycle.

Can I just show up at the start of the next class? Do I need to do anything before?

No, Every new client will need to meet with a cessation counselor prior to starting classes to do a quick, intake form. Please call 805-781-5564 to set up a time.

Can I get free Nicotine Replacement Therapy?

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is available free of charge to qualifying participants who are actively enrolled in quit smoking classes.

Can I attend classes just a couple times a month?

No. Each participant is encouraged to attend regularly, otherwise will not recieve any Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

Are there cessation classes for pregnant women?

YES! The Tobacco Control Program has a program called "Baby's FIrst Breath". We offer free, tailored quit tobacco classes, one-on-one classes, and other services for pregnant women and familes of children under five years old. We want Mom, baby, and children to all breath clean air, our servies are designed to help you achieve that.

Can I use e-cigarettes/ Vaping to help me quit smoking?

Currently, the FDA has not approved e-cigarettes for Tobacco Cessation. The County of San Luis Obispo does not recommend using e-cigrettes to quit smoking. Studies show that smokers who try to use e-cigarettes to assist in quitting, are very likely to to become a "dual user" and eventually use both conventional cigarettes, plus e-cigarettes.
