When and where is this service offered?

10-Week Quit Tobacco Class: If you are looking for group support, this is the class for you. Share your goals with others going through the quit process. Meet new friends who can help you keep your tobacco-free lifestyle. This facilitator-led series meets for 1 hour each week for 10 weeks, in three locations throughout the County. Please call the Tobacco Control Program at (805) 781-4945 to register for current classes.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): Nicotine patches, gum, and/or lozenges are available to participants (adults 18 years and older) in our Quit Tobacco Classes. If you are unable to attend our classes, you may still qualify for NRT through your insurance. In most cases, Medi-Cal members can also get quitting aids from their pharmacy.

Telephone Counseling: If you are not able to meet in person for one of our three Quit Tobacco Classes, but would like a one-on-one counseling, you can call the California Smokers' Helpline. Helpline counseling is easy, convenient, and has been proven to double smokers’ chances of quitting for good. Services are available in multiple languages.

Individual In-Person Counseling: Do you smoke or vape and have a young child living in your home? Indvididual in-person counseling is available through our Baby’s First Breath program for pregnant women, family members, and caregivers of children ages prenatal to 5.

Quit Vaping Texting Program: This program is tailored by age group to give teens and young adults appropriate recommendations about quitting. Youth and young adults can access the new e-cigarette quit program by texting "DITCHJUUL" to 88709. Parents and other adults looking to help young people quit should text "QUIT" to (202) 899-7550.

No Butts Mobile App: Want help to quit smoking while you’re on the go? The No Butts mobile app offers quick and tailored help, right from the palm of your hand.The app has helpful features like logging your smoking triggers, reminders to keep you motivated, and pointers on all kinds of quit smoking topics. What are the Quit Tobacco classes like?

A trained Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist from the Public Health Department's Tobacco Control Program, facilitates these 10-week group classes. Each session is approximately one hour in length. Throughout the series, you will learn about tools and strategies to help you break the habit of smoking and quit vaping.

Class participants are asked to attend each week prepared to participate in discussions, support fellow group members, and have an open mind to trying something new.

Does it cost money?

All of the services listed on this page (group classes, telephone support, etc) are 100% FREE for adults and youth who live in San Luis Obispo County. No insurance information is required and all information is confidential.

How do I get FREE nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)?

If you are 18 years and older, you can get a free supply of nicotine patches by participating in our Quit Tobacco classes.

If you're unable to attend our group classes, you may still qualify for free NRT through your insurance. If you have Medi-Cal insurance, please click here for more information.

Are services available in other languages?

Local services offered through SLO County Tobacco Control Program are only available in English at this time.

However, free telephone counseling through California Smokers' Helpine is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. Counselors are available weekdays, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Or sign up 24/7 online.

Can e-cigarettes (vapes) help me quit smoking?

E-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA as a quit smoking aid. So far, the research shows there is limited evidence that e-cigarettes are effective for helping smokers quit. There are other proven, safe, and effective methods for quitting smoking. Our counselors can help you figure out which treatment strategy is right for you.
